NFL player Adrian Peterson had his life turned upside down again. This time on child abuse charges where he has been indicted after an investigation in Texas showed that Adrian Peterson whipped his son with a switch.
In the African American community we grew up “getting our own switches off the tree”. There was something different about the way things used to be. It took a village to raise the kids. If you were down the street and “Mr. Johnson” saw you do something out of line or disrespectful, “Mr. Johnson” would whoop you then take you down to your house and explain to your parents what happened, only to be whooped again by your parents for being disrespectful.
In those days even teachers would paddle you for misbehaving. If not paddling, you would be hit on the hand with a ruler for inaccurate spelling or falling behind. We were so afraid of misbehaving because we didn’t want to deal with the consequences of our parents. Of course there were still some hard heads out there who took a while to get things together, but the ultimate point is that there was a general theme of discipline that simply doesn’t exist anymore.
The government simply doesn’t agree with parents physically discipling our children because of their rights, however many parents disagree. Unfortunately for Adrian Peterson, he found himself in a situation where his “old school” ways of growing up has worked against him. Hopefully these charges brought against him will be dropped!
